The 2023 NHL All-Star Weekend gets underway with the All-Star Skills contest at FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, Florida on Friday, February 3 (2/3/2023) at 7 p.m. EST.
This year, there are seven events that will take place in South Florida. In addition to some fan favorites like Fastest Skater and Hardest Shot, the NHL has three new events this year that are part of the skills night.
This year's NHL All-Star Game will be a mix of the biggest stars and the players who will eventually replace them as league standard bearers.
Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin and Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby have had a combined 11 previous appearances, though this will be their first time at the same game since 2017. San Jose Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson is making his seventh appearance and first in four years.
Fans can also watch Hughes represent the Metropolitan Division in the NHL All-Star game tournament on Saturday, Feb. 4, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. ET on ABC, ESPN and ESPN+. The tournament, which has a three-on-three format and two 10-minute periods, pits the four divisions (Atlantic, Metropolitan, Central and Pacific) against each other in single-elimination style.
This year’s event will feature many of the usual popular events seen annually, plus the league is also introducing several new and unique events that take advantage of South Florida’s warm climate and oceanside setting.
In addition to dozens of the NHL stars, a handful of top talents from women’s hockey – Team Canada’s Sarah Nurse, Emily Clark, Rebecca Johnston, plus Team USA’s Hilary Knight and Alex Carpenter – are scheduled to participate in various events during All-Star weekend.
The NHL added three brand new events to the night which include the Splash Shot, Pitch ‘n Puck, and Tendy Tandem.
They have also brought in five elite women’s hockey players from Team USA and Team Canada to take part in the action.
In this iconic event, players will take a timed lap around FLA Live Arena. Participants can choose to go in whichever direction and can begin up to three feet behind the starting line. There will be two rounds, with the first go-around determining which two players will meet in the final.
